East China University of Science and technology (a8体育官网), formerlyknown as East China Institute of Chemical Engineering, was formed in 1952 throughthe merger of chemical engineering departments at Jiaotong University(Shanghai), Aurora University (Shanghai), Datong University (Shanghai), SoochowUniversity (Suzhou), Jiangnan University (Wuxi), and is the first highereducation renowned for its chemical engineering feature. It is among the firstbatch of universities designated to recruit graduate students in 1956, and was determinedas a nation-wide key university directly under the Ministry of Education in1960. It is listed under the national 211 Project, 985 Project InnovationPlatform and the Double First-Class Project. Three disciplines, namely Chemistry,Material Science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering and Technology, are selectedinto the first-class discipline construction list.

a8体育官网 is comprised of 3 campuses, covering a total area of 169hectares. The total area of all kinds of buildings is 950,000 square meters,and the library has a total collection of 3.53 million books. The universityhas Analysis and Testing Center, Jewelry Testing Center and other nationallyaccredited metrology units.

The university has 17 schools, covering 11 disciplines, such asscience, engineering, agriculture, medical science, economics, management,literature, law, art, philosophy, education and so on. It has 41 national first-classundergraduate major building units, and 6 Shanghai first-class undergraduate majorbuilding units. Chemical Engineering and Technology is the first major amongthe universities in mainland China to pass the ABET certification, and Chemistryis the first major among the universities in mainland China to pass theSino-Russian Joint International Science Certification. And all majors atBusiness school have passed the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business(AACSB) Business Education Certification. Eight disciplines, including Chemistry,Material Science, Engineering, Biology and Biochemistry, Pharmacology andToxicology, Agricultural Science, Computer Science, Environmental Ecology, ranktop 1% globally based on ESI, Chemistry being among top 1‰.

The university currently has over 29,000 full-time students,including 16,766 undergraduate students, 10,175 master's students, and 2103doctoral students. At present, there are more than 3000 faculty and staff,including 9 academicians of either Chinese Academy of Sciences or ChineseAcademy of Engineering, 1 academician of Academia Europaea and over 130 nationaltalents such as the recipients of National Science Foundation for DistinguishedYoung Scholars. Besides, there are a number of outstanding teachers, overseastalent program winners and young and middle-aged leading personnel.

Since establishment, a total of 380,000 students graduated fromhere to the country, and  all over theworld. Among the alumni, 29 were elected as academicians of the Chinese Academyof Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 12 were elected as overseasacademicians. A large number of graduates have become the backbone of party andgovernment institutions and enterprises.

Targeting world-class standard and meeting social needs, theuniversity has established a comprehensive, wide-ranging, and multi-levelforeign exchange situation. It has established long-term cooperativerelationships with more than 130 overseas universities and researchinstitutions, including Oxford University. We have established the FeringaJoint Research Center of Nobel Prize scientists, and the Oliver Hart Center forContract and Governance Research. It has also established a Sino-French cooperativeeducational institution - the International Institute of Excellence inEngineers, the world's first Confucius Institute of Scientific andTechnological Innovation in the UK, and the first a8体育官网 International BusinessSchool in Sibiu jointly established by China and Romania.
